Engraving done for Isaiah Thomas’ 1774 almanack titled “The Wicked Statesman”.
The figure of £1500 that’s written on the parchment is the salary that Massachusetts Governor Thomas Hutchinson was earning in 1774 for the tea tax.
The engraving was done by Paul Revere, though the artwork isn’t his. He was a fine engraver and silversmith, but a poor artist, and most of his images were based on work done by other people—either in collaboration, or outright stealing (as in the case of the Boston Massacre engraving).
In this case the source was probably a 1772 engraving aimed at an anonymous Earl for selling off England to France.
